About ‘Víkurkirkja church in Iceland’ by KC Photography

The famous Víkurkirkja church in the Icelandic village of Vík í Mýrdal. Vík, in the municipality of Mýrdalshreppur, is the southernmost place in Iceland. It is also the place with the highest rainfall. Its name means something like "bay in the moor valley". Vík lies on a pitch-black beach with to its west the Reynisdrangar, black 66-metre-high basalt columns (remnants of volcanoes), in the sea. According to tradition, they are trolls who were surprised by the first rays of the sun as they tried to pull a ship ashore. Initially, Vík was a fishing village, but due to the absence of a port and the dangerous coast that claimed the lives of many sailors, it became more of a trading town from 1887. There is a monument on the beach in memory of the drowned sailors.
