Dreamy image showing the view you have when you stand on "Butte de Stonne", in northern France.In the soft light of the setting sun, you look out over the surrounding hills, hearing nothing except the wind through the trees and the beautiful concert of birds.But the history of Butte de Stonne is less of a question: From 15 to 18 May 1940, the village was the scene of a tank battle between the French and German armies. The village changed camps 17 times and was completely destroyed after four days. Among the belligerents, 57 tanks were destroyed and there were 34,000 casualties (dead or wounded).
