The Arenal is a recently reactivated volcano in northwestern Costa Rica, located 90 kilometres northwest of the capital San José.
The conical Arenal is a stratovolcano composed mainly of andesite. It is the youngest and most active volcano in Costa Rica. Near the Arenal, several hot springs are heated by the volcano, including Tabacón, today a popular tourist resort.
It was always assumed that the Arenal was a dead volcano, but after sleeping for about four centuries, the volcano became active again on 28 July 1968 and destroyed the villages of Tabacón, Pueblo Nuevo and San Luís in its eruption. This killed 87 people. The major eruption lasted several days and covered 15 km² with rocks, lava and ash. In total, over an area of more than 232 km², livestock, houses, forest and agricultural areas were damaged.
Since then, the Arenal has remained continuously active. This can be seen particularly well at night, including from the nearby village of La Fortuna, when glowing boulders roll down the slope. Eruptions take place frequently but are usually not very violent.
