The city of Naples is unique. The centre of Naples consists of a maze of narrow, dark alleyways that have a charm all of their own. The layout of the historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still corresponds to that of the Greek colony of Neapolis and visitors can follow the ancient streets. In some places, the remains of the old city walls and city gates are still clearly recognisable.
The Castel Sant'Elmo is a military fortress on the Vomero hill in Naples. Today, the fortress is the best vantage point over the city.
Mount Vesuvius is currently the only active volcano on the European mainland. Vesuvius is 1,281 metres high.
