The town of Sorrento on the peninsula of the same name on the Gulf of Naples lies on an imposing tufa terrace, high above steeply sloping cliffs.
Sorrento is one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Italy. Its marinas on the cliffs are lined with restaurants overlooking the Bay of Naples.
From the ridge behind the town, you have a marvellous view of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
To the south-east of Naples, Mount Vesuvius rises 1,281 metres into the sky. Vesuvius is currently the only active volcano on the European mainland. Its crater, 200 metres deep, lies within the remains of Monte Somma, whose former height is estimated at 2,500 metres. All that remains of it today is a crescent-shaped wall.
The city of Naples is unique. The centre of Naples consists of a maze of narrow, dark alleyways with a charm all of their own. The layout of the historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still corresponds to that of the Greek colony of Neapolis and visitors can follow the ancient streets. In some places, the remains of the old city walls and city gates are still clearly recognisable.
