Vespertijd is a work by Belgian painter Constant Permeke. He produced the canvas in 1927. Vespertijd is a good example of Permeke's artistic vision. It is characterised by massive figures rendered in large geometric planes and an overwhelming monumentality. The work consists of supporting planes that fit into a strongly constructed whole that radiates great balance. Constantly recurring are the intermingled and superimposed and unfinished motifs. In Vespertijd, but also in Permeke's other works, the artist uses the deformation and hypertrophy of hands and feet, among others, in a very expressive way. As far as figuration is concerned, Permeke opted for a very angular and flatly rendered man and woman during their afternoon break. The woman grinds coffee while her husband smokes a pipe. Constant Permeke (Antwerp, 31 July 1886 - Ostend, 4 January 1952) was a Belgian expressionist painter and sculptor. He is considered the most important representative of Flemish expressionism. In his Ostend youth, Permeke attended academy in Bruges from 1903 to 1906.
