The Very Large Telescope (VLT) at 2600-metre-high Cerro Paranal is ESO's main instrument for observations in visible and infrared light. The telescope is located in Chile's Atacama Desert. Operating individually with a large collection of instruments, the four telescopes, each with a diameter of 8.2 metres, have already made stunning scientific discoveries.
The VLT also offers the possibility of combining the light from the four telescopes and operating as an interferometer. The Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), with its own set of instruments, provides milli-arc second-level imagery and position measurements with an accuracy of 10 microarcseconds. The small spherical telescopes are auxiliary telescopes with a diameter of 1.8 metres (four in total).
Inspired by his father, Fred Kamphues took his first photographs at the age of five. Ever since he has been intrigued by the the story a powerful image can tell. With a strong appetite for travel and adventure, many of Kamphues projects have epic proportions. His shoots range.. Read more…
