Venice had been on my list for years, and in November 2021, I seized my chance. Because of the pandemic and the low season, the city was unusually quiet, a rare silence in a normally lively environment. This very quietness gave me space to photograph at my leisure, as here, at night at the back of the Teatro la Fenice.
I love photographing when the city calms down. Daylight gives way to the warm lighting of lanterns and facades, and the atmosphere changes subtly but palpably. My wide-angle lens allowed me to capture the canal, the bridge and the surrounding buildings in one image, deliberately choosing a composition that emphasises the reflections and the interplay of lines.
At home at my desk, I carefully edit each shot. For this image, I chose a warm colour finish to preserve the atmosphere of the moment: intimate, nostalgic and timeless. The result is an atmospheric viewing plate that reflects the magic of Venice at night, a city full of history, light and silence.
