About "Venice, Gondola, Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge"

About the artwork

Venice is world-famous as the "city of a thousand bridges". The Italian city was built on countless wooden piles, so that the various districts are surrounded by water all around. Probably the most famous waterway in the metropolis is the Grand Canal, which winds its way through the area in an S-shape. Hundreds of boats bring people from one side to the other every day or serve as excursion boats for many tourists. The Grand Canal flows past pompous buildings and palaces from the Italian Renaissance and gives visitors a wonderful view of the city's architectural gems. The canal itself is only five metres deep and on average fifty metres wide. More than 45 canals flow into the Grand Canal, making it the hub of Venetian shipping. The Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto) in Venice connects the districts (sestieri) of San Polo and San Marco and is one of the oldest bridge structures in the city of Venice. The bridge crosses the Grand Canal at this point with a span of 48 metres, a width of 22 metres and a clearance height of 7.50 metres. The Rialto Bridge is, among other things, one of the most famous buildings in the city of Venice. The foundations of the bridge consist of 12 000 oak piles driven into the ground.
