The Vatican Obelisk is an ancient Egyptian obelisk that now stands in St Peter's Square in front of St Peter's Basilica. The rose granite monolith is 25.31 metres high and the second largest in Rome, measured without the base. It weighs 320 tonnes and is the only one that is not engraved with hieroglyphics. On 10 September 1586, Domenico Fontana succeeded in erecting the obelisk in St Peter's Square in Rome.
