About the artwork

Van Nelle Factory, UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The former Van Nelle factory on the Schie in Rotterdam. Symbol of the New Objectivity. Built between 1927 and 1930. In black and white

It is the symbol of modern architecture in the Netherlands: the factory for coffee, tea and tobacco of the Erven de Wed. J. Van Nelle in Rotterdam, known simply as the Van Nelle factory.
From the train between Rotterdam and The Hague, the complex is clearly visible. Consisting of the factory itself, a large office building and several sheds and warehouses, the Van Nelle Factory is a national monument and is on Unesco's World Heritage List.

Factory and office were built in the second half of the 1920s to the design of J.A. Brinkman & L.C. van der Vlugt. This architectural firm was one of the leading representatives of New Objectivity functionalism between the two world wars. They set a radically modern course and realised a building with a load-bearing structure of reinforced concrete floors and columns and non-load-bearing façades of glass and steel. The absence of load-bearing walls meant that the floor plan and façade could be freely divided, something functionalist architects were very attached to, not only in industrial buildings, but also in houses.
