About ‘Ut Witte Staedje. Holstraot in Thoear.’ by Nop Briex

In the 18th century, the principality of Thorn became a stopping place for the noble daughters of Europe's imperial princes and counts. There they were prepared for marriage with a man of standing. Under French rule, Thorn suffered greatly. That is also when Thorn acquired its characteristic white colour. After the noble ladies fled in 1794, the French introduced a tax based on the size of the windows. The poor population, often living in large properties that had previously belonged to rich people, could not afford them. To reduce the size of the tax assessment, they bricked up the windows. With the aim of hiding these building marks ("scars of poverty"), the houses were whitewashed.[7]

Because of these white houses and the quietness of the town, Thorn soon became popular with artists and tourists. At the division of the province of Limburg in 1839, Thorn remained part of the Netherlands. During the Second World War, Thorn was liberated by the Belgian army on 25 September 1944. In the second half of the 20th century, Thorn expanded with a residential area to the north of the town. In 1973, Thorn's old core received national recognition and was designated a protected townscape.

The White Town of Thorn has a beautiful centre where almost all the houses are painted white. Also here in the Holstraat. I love coming there. The small town in central Limburg also has a wine estate.
