Ugolino di Nerio was one of the most important painters in Siena and Florence in the early 14th century. He received prestigious commissions for churches and this small work was probably part of a large altarpiece he created, now dismantled. It would have been one in a series of panels that formed the painted base, called a predella. The kneeling Carmelite friar (identified by his white robe), the woman and young boy pictured here could be the patrons of the altarpiece.
Ugolino di Nerio (1280 - 1349) was an Italian painter who was active between 1317 and 1327 in his native Siena and in Florence.
