Two Dassault-Bréguet Super-Étendards during airshow.
The Super-Étendard is based on the Dassault Étendard IV. In the 1960s, when the French Navy was looking for a suitable successor to the aging Dassault Étendard IV and the Vought F-8 Crusader, French designer Dassault designed the Super-Étendard, a more powerful and perfected further development of the Étendard IV, with a weapon system developed specifically for this aircraft, the AM-39 Exocet antiaircraft missile. Also, the French version of the Super-Étendard was capable of ejecting the nuclear Air Sol Moyenne Portee (ASMP) missile.
The prototype first flew on Oct. 28, 1974. The French Aéronavale ordered 80 units that were phased in starting in 1978. Aircraft from the first production series flew for the first time in November 1977. The first Super-Étendard naval units became operational in June 1979.
This photo of two Super-Étendards was taken on June 7, 2014 at the La Ferté-Alais airshow.
