The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States armed forces. During World War II, black Americans were still subject to race laws in many US states and the US military was racially segregated, as was much of the federal government. The Tuskegee Airmen were discriminated against both inside and outside the military.
The Tuskegee Airmen, despite all opposition due to discrimination, were eventually commended for their outstanding record of service in the war while protecting US bombers with white crews from enemy fighters and received several high honours for it.
