Tugboats along the Scheldt in Dendermonde - oil on canvas

by Galerie Ringoot

"Tugs at a shipyard along the Scheldt in Dendermonde (Belgium)" is an atmospheric oil painting by Belgian painter Pieter Ringoot (1921-2011)

This work depicts an authentic scene at De Killeweg, a location along the Scheldt closely linked to the maritime and artisanal past of the East Flemish city of Dendermonde.

Here, Pieter captures not only the shipyard but also the characteristic tranquillity of the river. The warm sun falling on the tug in the foreground contrasts beautifully with the cool waters of the Scheldt, where two other boats are peacefully bobbing. The Killeweg forms the quiet backbone of the landscape: a place where craftsmen and boatmen used to meet, and where the river was an essential part of daily life.

In the background, we see the green banks that typify Dendermonde, while the wharf buildings and wooden fencing bear witness to the craftsmanship that was carried out here for generations. Ringoot captures this world with calm, precise brushstrokes and a warm colour palette that pays tribute to the Belgian river landscape.

With his recognisable style and attention to light and detail, Ringoot creates a timeless window on the rich maritime heritage of the Scheldt region.
