A tribute to Alexander Calder (1898 -1976) he was one of the best known American sculptors. He began as an autodidact, attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and got to know avant-garde contemporaries such as Joan Miró, Piet Mondriaan and Theo van Doesburg. A meeting with Piet Mondrian in his Paris studio in 1930 resulted in his first mobiles, which were apparently not subject to the laws of gravity. These mobiles eventually made him famous and in 1931 he had his first major exhibition in Paris. In 1934 he created his first mobile designed for outdoor use. He also made his first large abstract sculptures. He called these "stabiles", to distinguish them from the mobiles.
