Trakai Castle in Lake Galvé is one of Lithuania's highlights. There are numerous places to see the castle. The most popular is the village of Trakai and then see it from different sides via the promenade. The castle is located on an island in a lake. Its red roof tiles, steep towers and idyllic location make it seem like a fairy tale, but nothing could be further from the truth. You can visit the castle, which is now a museum. You can also take a boat around it. Lake Galvé is quite large; it covers an area of 388 hectares. And there is more to see than just the castle. Including many water birds, but also the luxurious Uzutrakis Palace on the shore. You can visit the castle via the bridge. It is now a museum and open to the public. You can easily walk around the castle along the waterfront. The history of Trakai is not entirely known. It was Gediminas (ruler of the Grand Principality of Lithuania from 1316 to 1341) who started construction. According to the stories, he started building on a peninsula in 1321. He then moved the capital from Kernavė to Trakai. In 1323, Vilnius became the new capital of Lithuania.
