About "Touch (from the Cracked series)"

by Sarina Rick

About the artwork

The picture shows the androgyne body, covered by a layer of cracked, white earth, situated between tree-like structures. The body seems to simultaneously grow out of the "trees" and merge with them - a process of transition that tells of transformation and rebirth. The figure's posture is introspective: the head is slightly tilted, the hands clasp one of the pillar-like structures as if seeking support in it or detaching itself from it.

The monochrome colour palette in black and white reinforces the tension between stillness and movement, between destruction and renewal. The cracked surface of the body and the "trees" connects them visually and thematically. The question arises: Is the figure about to emerge from the earth, or is it returning to it?

The Cracked series deals with the fluid transition between man and earth. The boundaries are blurred here: Is the earth devouring man, or is it the other way round? Are they inextricably interwoven? Does man wear the mask of the earth or does nature envelop man with its own shell?

The visual language invites us to discover individual stories and interpretations. Perhaps "Touch" stands for vulnerability, connectedness or for the eternal cycle of birth and decay.
