The monumental tombstones of Cimetière du Père-Lachaise in Paris demand to be rendered in a mystical atmosphere. With 69,000 tombstones, 30,000 of which have historic monument status, this largest cemetery in Paris is a special place iv photographing unusual tombstones. With centuries-old graves alongside new ones, it looks like a disorganised jumble of grave monuments but with 3.5 million visitors a year, it is an interesting location to visit.
150 years in weather have turned many tombstones into small ruins where moss and rust have had free rein. Even stones that have not survived the test of time contribute to a unique atmosphere that makes this cemetery perhaps the most beautiful in the world.
