Tombs in Madain Saleh. Madain Saleh is an ancient city in Saudi Arabia. It is also called Hegra and is located near the town of Al-Ula. The ruins of Madain Saleh are on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The city used to be inhabited by the Nabataeans. The same people as in Petra in Jordan. Petra is only much better known, but that could be about to change. Saudi Arabia is betting heavily on tourism and a lot of work is being done to accommodate many tourists in Madain Saleh. It is already well organised if you go there as a tourist. There is a lot to do and a lot to see. It is a beautiful archaeological site that has only just opened to tourists. If you ever go to Saudi Arabia I would definitely go to Madain Saleh. I would go for at least 3 nights so you have two full days to explore this area. A beautiful landscape where you can camp freely, except on the grounds of Madain Saleh. By the way, it is also worth going to Hegra after dark. In winter, you can visit Madain Saleh in the evening. Tombs are lit up then and the atmosphere is very different from during the day.
