The painting shows a man on horseback riding a small group of cattle over a wooden trestle bridge over Gardiners Creek and then on the outskirts of Melbourne.
"In Roberts' beautifully designed view of a bridge over a creek from 1885, with its elongated shapes made of wooden pillars and their reflections in water, and the inventive positioning of the fence of the bridge, it becomes a decorative rectangular pattern along the top edge of the painting, Roberts deals with a typical impressionist subject and the interest of the movement in unusual visual angles. But he avoids dissolving the subject into a pulverized world of color effects. The result is a painting that looks much more like Whistler than Monet ... "
