It was one of the larger carnivorous marsupials in Australia before settlers arrived. The marsupial wolf belongs to the Thylacinidae, a family of predatory marsupials. It is the Nessie of Australia because while it is believed to be extinct, some still have hopes that the animal occurs in small groups in Tasmania's vast wilderness.
