Three women stand barefoot by the North Sea. They are wearing long, simple dresses in turquoise, yellow-green and blue-green, their eyes fixed on the sea. The full moon stands above the water, calm and bright.
The sand beneath their feet glows in the cold light, their shadows stretching long behind them. They say nothing, but in their silent demeanour lies a shared story.
On the right-hand side of the picture, fine, translucent plants grow into the picture, like fleeting thoughts or memories that appear in the moment.
A barely visible detail: the woman in the centre seems to be surrounded by a delicate light, as if something is emerging from her or detaching itself from her.
The idea for this picture came to me after a quiet evening walk by the North Sea. I had observed three women standing next to each other by the water, silent, each on her own and yet deeply connected.
The full moon had just risen and the light lay on the water like a veil.
The scene is meant to radiate vastness and tranquillity. The cool tones of the sky and the soft moonlight create an open, almost timeless atmosphere.
It is an image for pausing, for the small transitions in life in which you don't speak, but are simply there. Together.
I created this picture at a time when I was letting go of a lot myself. Perhaps it was my way of making a piece of it visible, in light, shadow and the sea.
