Sculptor Georges Grard (1901 - 1984) favoured the female nude in his work. Through the sculpture 'The Sea' (bronze 1954), he expresses the lushness and sensuality of the sea in a female figure.
This is Ostend's best-known female statue and is known to the people of Ostend as 'Thick Mathille'.
