La Gería is the wine region of Lanzarote. After the eruptions of 1730-1736, the area was completely covered by a thick layer of lava, which meant that the inhabitants had to be creative in order to grow their crops. They dug holes in the lava so that the roots of the vines could reach the fertile soil. To protect the tendrils from the wind, they built a wall in the shape of a crescent moon (Zoco).
