Where the Baltic Sea, architecture and that holiday feeling come together, the Müther Tower in Binz rises from the coastal landscape like a little slice of the future. Its extraordinary shape makes it an unmistakable eye-catcher and, at the same time, tells a story of the architectural history of the island of Rügen.
Situated right on the beach, the tower impressively combines the dynamism of the sea with the lightness of modern, organically curved architecture. The elegant concrete structure was designed by the visionary civil engineer Ulrich Müther, whose works are renowned far beyond Rügen. Today, the Müther Tower is regarded as a remarkable testament to his extraordinary architectural artistry and as a popular photo opportunity for visitors from all over the world.
The design is the work of the Binz-based civil engineer Ulrich Müther (1934–2007), who became known as a pioneer of modern shell concrete construction. Born and raised in Binz, Müther developed a design language all of his own: his delicate concrete shells appear light and elegant, even though they are exceptionally stable. Over the decades, he realised more than 60 – or, according to other estimates, over 70 – shell structures both at home and abroad, thereby leaving a lasting mark on the architecture of the GDR. Among his best-known works, alongside the rescue tower in Binz, are the Hyparschale in Magdeburg, the ‘Teepott’ in Warnemünde and the ‘Ahornblatt’ in Berlin.
Let yourself be inspired by this extraordinary image and bring a touch of the Baltic Sea atmosphere into your home. A picture for everyone who loves the sea, appreciates exceptional architecture and wishes to preserve the unique atmosphere of Binz.
