The green forest by the river

by Annette Schmucker

The artwork depicts an evocative forest and river landscape dominated by vibrant shades of May green and yellow. A calm, narrow stream or river flows through the centre of the picture, stretching into the distance. The dark sky and the surrounding trees are reflected on the calm water’s surface in cool shades of blue and grey. On either side of the water, slender trees rise up with bright, almost neon-like foliage that radiates the freshness of spring. The delicate, dark branches and trunks wind their way through the lush greenery, lending the composition a clear verticality. In the upper part of the picture, one looks up through the treetops at a cloudy, dramatic sky in dark grey and bluish-violet tones. The stark contrast between the gloomy sky and the radiant green of the leaves creates a tense, almost mystical atmosphere. The painterly application of paint is dotted and speckled in places, lending the foliage an airy and dynamic texture. On the riverbank, earthy browns and ochres blend into the lush green, giving the foreground a natural grounding. Overall, the painting conveys the powerful sensation of a fresh, slightly stormy spring day in the midst of unspoilt nature.
