One week a year, Kinderdijk's 19 historic windmills are put in the spotlight. During that week in September, all the windmills are illuminated in the evening, creating a beautiful spectacle and attracting thousands of visitors. Despite the crowds, with a bit of patience it is usually possible to find a quiet spot to photograph. On this evening there was no wind at all which resulted in beautiful reflections in the surrounding waters (as well as an abundance of mosquitos) with the textures in the clouded sky creating some extra drama.
The first windmills here date back to the early 15th century, although most of the ones seen today were built between 1700 and 1750. It is one of the Netherlands' most famous tourist attractions and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997.
