The drunken couple, Jan Havicksz. Steen, c. 1655 - c. 1665 oil on panel, h 52.5cm × w 64cm.
A man and a woman are so drunk that they do not realise they are being robbed. Their folly is underlined by the prayer card on the shot. On it is an owl, which was considered a foolish animal in the 17th century. After all, it cannot see anything during the day, even with a candle or glasses. The message: the drunken couple is as blind as he is.
