About the artwork

The Citadel of Antwerp, also known as the Zuidkasteel and Zuiderkasteel, was a citadel and coercive fortress in Antwerp, located in the present-day district of Het Zuid. The citadel was built between 1567 and 1572, commissioned by the Duke of Alva, governor of the Netherlands. As a result of the Spanish fury in Antwerp on 4 November 1576, the Pacification of Ghent, on 8 November 1576, agreed between the participating states that the Spanish troops should leave the Netherlands. In March 1577, the Spanish troops left the citadel and on 1 and 2 August 1577, the remaining Walloon and German troops were chased out of the citadel by armed Antwerp citizens, fearing a new fury by mutinous soldiers. On 23 August 1577, Antwerp citizens began to demolish the hated Citadel and from 24 August 1577, the Hernando and Duca bastions were demolished along with the ramparts facing the city. A few years later, the citadel was the scene of an assassination attempt on William the Silent.
