This digital painting is an adaptation of a photograph taken on the edge of Hverfjall crater in northern Iceland, near the "mosquito lake" Myvatn.
The landscape is very varied. In the foreground we see an area of moss, sedum, shrubs and other low vegetation. The jagged shores of the lake consist of grassland, which at this time, late April, is not yet green but more of a yellow-brown color. The lake itself is still partially frozen; spring comes late in Iceland. Because there is almost no wind, the part with open water is like a mirror. Mount Vinbelgjarfjall, with its anthracite-colored slopes of sand, gravel and rocks, reflects in it. Further away we see more mountains and plateaus, partly covered with snow. And above it all hangs a threatening polar sky.
