About "The city of Gouda"

by Eus Driessen

About the artwork

Gouda is a city and municipality in the east of the province of South Holland in the Netherlands with 72,825 inhabitants (May 31, 2018, source: CBS) on a territory of 16.92 km².

The city is located in Central Holland and in the Randstad urban area, roughly equidistant from Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague. Gouda has a regional function within the Green Heart, where its inhabitants are the largest city and the second largest municipality (after Alphen aan den Rijn). It is measured in terms of population, the 48th municipality of the Netherlands and the 12th municipality of Zuid-Holland.

Gouda lies at the confluence of the rivers De Gouwe and Hollandse IJssel. Thanks in part to inland shipping over these rivers, Gouda grew into an important city in the Middle Ages. In 1272 the city got city rights and at the end of the Middle Ages Gouda had become the fifth city of Holland. In the city center you can still find a large number of historic and monumental buildings, of which the City Hall and St. John's Church are probably the most famous. The city is also known for its Gouda cheese, which is traded in the summer on the Thursday tourist cheese market. Finally, Gouda is known for the manufacture of candles, pipes, Gouda pottery, syrup waffles and the annual Candle evening.
