About "The architect of darkness"

by Mathias Ulrich

About the artwork

The black and white picture shows a deserted Parisian street lined with a row of old gas lanterns. The wet cobblestone path reflects their light in long, shining streaks. At the end of the street, a historic building - presumably a wing of the Louvre - rises majestically, its architecture looking like a silent cathedral of the past in the damp twilight. Bare trees tower darkly into the sky, their branches seeming to have merged with the iron lanterns.
The atmosphere is melancholic, mysterious and suffused with quiet tension.
The light from the lanterns breaks through the fog and twilight, creating a play of shadows and reflections - a symbol of the duality of truth and deception. It is as if the scene is holding its breath just before something happens: a meeting, a confession, perhaps a crime. The place seems at once familiar and unapproachable - a stage on which past and present become blurred.
