The original name when the bridge was built in 1965 was the Oosterschelde bridge. The 5022 meter long structure later became the name Zeelandbrug. Construction began on May 29, 1962. Until 1972, this was Europe's longest bridge. In 1972, this record was broken by the Öland bridge in Sweden which was 6070 meters long.
