About the artwork

The Willemsvaart is a canal in the Dutch city of Zwolle that runs from the city centre of Zwolle to the river IJssel.

As the city of Zwolle was located several kilometers from the IJssel, there was a desire to dig a canal already in the Middle Ages. This desire was however successfully prevented for centuries by the competing cities of the IJssel, Kampen and Deventer.
Only at the beginning of the 19th century, the Willemsvaart was opened on 24 August 1819. The construction was made possible by a major financial contribution from King Willem I, to whom the canal owes its name.

After the Zwolle-IJssel canal was opened in 1964, the Willemsvaart became superfluous. Due to the construction of roads and changes to the layout of the area through which the Willemsvaart flows, it is no longer possible to navigate the whole Willemsvaart. The canal with its locks is still a valuable and beautiful sight.
