About "The Two River Princesses, Yashima Gakutei, c. 1828. Japanese art ukiyo-e, surimono."

About the artwork

"Two Chinese ladies walk on the water, they are the princesses of the river: Gaô and Joei, the daughters of Emperor Shun. After their father's death, they were so overcome with grief that they drowned themselves in the Shang River. With two poems."

"A surimono is a luxurious print in which an image is combined with one or more poems. When printing a surimono, thicker paper, blind embossing and metal pigments, such as copper and silver powder were often used. The prints were often commissioned by poets created and given as exclusive gifts to friends and relations."
