About ‘The Swan – Erasmus Bridge by night’ by Maarten Steunenberg

I took this photograph one evening by the River Maas in Rotterdam. I waited until the sky was completely black and only the illuminated cables of the Erasmus Bridge remained — thin white lines that seem to emerge from the darkness.

What moves me about this image is how little is needed. The bridge is reduced to its essence: a single pylon, a fan of cables, a streak of light on the water. The city in the background is present, but unobtrusive.

It is hardly a photograph anymore, but rather a drawing in white on black. That is precisely why I photograph in black and white: everything that distracts disappears, the form remains.

For me, this is Rotterdam through and through. A city of daring and construction — that is where its beauty lies. De Zwaan deserves this kind of austerity. In an interior, this is a powerful, graphic image that works best on a light-coloured wall, where the deep black really comes into its own.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
