About the artwork

The black-and-white photograph of the escalator in the railway station is a striking snapshot of a normally busy place suddenly calming down. In a location where normally thousands of people move through the corridors and stairs, this photo shows the empty, desolate nature of a place with no human presence. The contrast between the sleek lines of the escalator and the empty space around it creates a sense of desolation, which seems strange and almost surreal especially in such a crowded environment.

The black and white makes the image timeless, as if it could take place in the past as well as in the future. It emphasises the geometry of the escalator and the symmetry of the station, and almost makes the empty space between the steps and the walls stand out even more. The absence of people gives the picture something melancholic, transforming the everyday moment of movement and activity in the station into a calmness we would normally never experience in such an environment. It captures a stillness rarely seen in busy, public spaces.

It is as if the photograph offers a reflection of a 'pause' in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a moment of breathing and contemplation amid the constant flow of the city. This makes the photo special and gives it an almost cinematic quality.
