On a misty morning in autumn, I photographed this avenue of trees in the Slochterbos. The Slochterbos is in the province of Groningen in the municipality of Midden-Groningen on the 23-hectare Fraeylemaborg estate. The elongated park was recently restored and dates mostly from the 19th century. It was laid out in the English Landscape style and is much larger than we expected. Strolling along the winding paths through this forest, you pass pretty bridges, ponds, benches, statues and striking little buildings. In fact, there are unusual follies in the forest, which makes the walk extra fun. In the 19th century, you often came across these strange little buildings without a function in gardens and parks in the English Landscape style. The follies at the Fraeylemaborg, however, are modern.
