The SBA's rather checkered shipping life began in 1951, the year a 100' diesel trawler, No. LT254, was built at the Richards Ironworks shipyard in Lowestoft on the east coast of central England.
Flying the flag of Great Britain and operating out of the port of Fleetwood, the ocean-going trawler went fishing.
Conversion to sailing vessel
From 1984 to 1985 an extensive conversion took place in Padstow (Cornwall): the high forecastle and the bridge superstructure were removed. The deckhouse underneath was left as a deck saloon and chart room, and a sundeck was built over it, which was pulled up to the ship's sides. All decks were covered with teak. Since the schooner was only to carry day-trippers, the crew quarters were left in their original condition; four berths in the Focksel (presently Kabelgatt), two single berths in the stern and behind that seven berths in the "Hotel zur Schraube". The former fish room has been converted into a large air-conditioned disco and bar.
In 1993, Joseph Maria Kelly purchased the neglected ship. It was renovated at considerable expense in 1994 and partially remodeled to meet the needs of the extended family. The accommodations were given a teak finish, the number of berths was increased, and the decks were given new wood decking. As a private sailing ship, it was intended to serve sailing, recreational and promotional purposes.
In 1995 the ship called at Rostock for the first time and contacts were made with Rostock fans and young people. Due to many commitments, the SANTA BARBARA ANNA could only be used a little by the Kelly Family.
Since January 1, 2014, the non-profit association "Bramschot e.V." has been operating the SANTA BARBARA ANNA in Rostock. The aim and purpose of this association, which was founded by the crew, is to preserve and maintain the traditional seamanship on tall ships as a custom and to pass it on to the next generation by involving young people.
