The archipelago consists of nine inhabited islands and several small, uninhabited islands. Their volcanic, black surface with lush green vegetation is somewhat reminiscent of Hawaii.
When you visit São Miguel, you will find miradouro's all over the coast: viewpoints that were once used to guard the coasts and spot whales. Now that whaling has ceased, the miradouro's are tourist viewpoints. You will often find a covered viewpoint and even public barbecues and dining tables.
The Miradouro da Vista dos Barcos is perhaps the island's most famous miradoura. In addition to stunning views of the phenomenal east coast, you can also see the lighthouse.
