The Rhythm of the Earth and Silence by Color Square

The work depicts a rhythmic pattern of large diamond shapes that are distributed across the entire picture plane like a woven landscape. Warm terracotta, sand and powdery shades alternate with off-white and muted grey-green. The consistent repetition initially creates a sense of order, but on closer inspection it becomes apparent that virtually no two shapes are completely identical.

It is precisely these small irregularities that give the work its character. The edges of the diamonds are ragged and visibly built up by hand, whilst raised lines of paint within each shape delineate smaller geometric figures. Some lines are sharp and angular, whilst others appear to have shifted slightly during the painting process. This lends the austere geometry an unexpected organic softness.

Another distinctive feature is how the negative space becomes part of the pattern. White hourglasses and arrow shapes emerge between the coloured areas, causing the composition to change constantly depending on the viewer’s perspective. At times the shapes seem to point upwards; at others, concentric diamonds appear that draw the eye inwards.

The thick, relief-like paint texture enhances the tactile quality. The work thus strikes a balance between geometric abstraction, textile pattern and contemporary wall art. The earthy colours and repetitive forms convey a sense of calm, whilst the handmade imperfections prevent the composition from becoming static.
