The Red Glow of Costa Rica – A macro shot of a red-eyed tree frog

by Jiri Viehmann

Perched on a lush, tropical green leaf, a red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) gazes out at the world with wide-open eyes. This macro photograph reveals a striking portrait of nature, bringing the extraordinary beauty of the Costa Rican rainforest into sharp focus in all its detail. The intensely red eyes stand in striking contrast to its bright green body — clear, alert and full of expression. Even the fine veins are visible in the eyes, lending the gaze a fascinating depth and vitality.

The delicate adhesive feet rest gently on the leaf’s surface, whilst the frog’s vibrant colours — green, blue and warm orange tones — appear as if painted. Every texture of its skin, every fine line, becomes visible through the close-up perspective, making the otherwise hidden world of the rainforest tangible. Light reflects gently off the damp surface of the leaf, creating a calm, almost magical atmosphere.

The moment feels still yet intense: a fleeting instant of direct encounter between human and nature. The frog appears alert, present and completely at one with its natural habitat.

This image brings the vibrant colour palette and mysterious atmosphere of the tropical rainforest into any room — an expressive portrait brimming with energy, rich detail and natural elegance.
