About ‘The Presentation of the Child in the Temple (Très Riches Heures) – Limbourg brothers’
This religious scene depicts Mary and Joseph presenting Jesus at the temple. The architecture is both classical and Gothic: columns, arches and richly decorated facades suggest a sacred space outside of time. The high priest stands centrally on a raised platform, while spectators in colourful robes watch the event. Mary's blue refers to her holy status. The Limburg brothers combine Byzantine solemnity with Gothic elegance and spatial logic. The figures have soft faces and graceful postures, almost like court characters. In this way, biblical history is placed within the aesthetics of 15th-century aristocracy. It is theology, but also court art.
