The Old Meebrug in Bruges at winter sunset by Bruges Artworks

This artwork depicts the old Meebrug in Bruges at sunset in winter. The stone bridge connects the historic façades on either side of the canal, whilst bare trees stand out as dark silhouettes against the pale evening sky. Behind the rooftops, large clouds are tinged with golden yellow, soft pink and orange in the fading sunlight.

The low arch of the bridge forms the tranquil focal point of the composition. Together with its reflection in the water, it creates an almost complete circle. The historic houses, the winter trees and the warm evening sky are also reflected in the Bruges canal. Cool shades of blue, grey and dark green are combined with bright golden reflections, creating an atmospheric contrast between wintry stillness and warm light.

I live and work as an artist and city guide in Bruges and based this composition on my own photograph of the city. Particularly during the short winter days, the light along the canals can change suddenly, lending familiar places an almost magical aura. In this work, I wanted to capture that fleeting moment just before nightfall.

The artwork was created using digital media and artistic drawing techniques. The refined lines, soft textures and layered colours bring the tranquil beauty of Bruges in winter into an interior.
