As the morning sun creeps gently over Milan's horizon, Piazza del Duomo is bathed in a soft, amber glow that transforms the square and the imposing Duomo di Milano into a scene of almost fairy-tale beauty. This square, which has been the centre of Milanese life since the Middle Ages, slowly awakens from its nocturnal silence. The cool morning air carries the scent of freshly baked bread from nearby bakeries and the gentle murmur of the fountains, which in the early hours are not yet drowned out by the hubbub of the day. Covering over 17,000 square metres, the square offers a vast canvas on which the Cathedral, like a giant sculpture, casts its shadow - a shadow that reaches long and slender across the cobblestones in the early hours, as if embracing the city.
