Windmills are part of the Netherlands, just like water. Windmills such as the molendriegang at Leidschendam were built to keep the water under control and to keep the polder dry. The windmills at the Driemanpolder were built in the 17th century and still rotate once a month on a Saturday. One of the mills burned down completely in 1902 after a lightning strike. Viewing the mills is not possible. For those who want to escape the big city from time to time, a trip to the Driemanspolder is a wonderful outing.
