Freely accessible, contiguous, watery. These are the characteristics of Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum. Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum is an area that is different from other nature reserves. With 540 hectares, it is the largest contiguous area of Meuse nature in North Limburg. The original Maasterrassen landscape is central to this area and the influence of water is noticeable everywhere. The ten-thousand-year-old river courses of the Meuse are recognizable and are now the domain of water in many forms. Streams, marshy forests and groundwater-fed plains make it a very varied area with an exceptional ecological wealth. Once in a while, water from the Meuse flows through the area. When the water levels are high, the high water channels are the first to flow. When the water levels in the Meuse continue to rise, the entire ten kilometer long Meuse arm from Ooijen to Wanssum will fill up and flow along with Mooder Maas in a spectacular fashion.
