About the artwork

The Hague, that beautiful city behind the dunes. That's how Harry Jekkers once managed to refer to the government city in the modest hit he had. The Hague, the government city of the Netherlands will have more than half a million inhabitants in 2023. From the 17th century onwards, The Hague was also known as the distinguished 's-Gravenhage. The name 's-Gravenhage is derived from des Gravenhage. Known as the city of law and peace, and home to the International Court of Justice, The Hague also has its parks and forests. The Haagsche forest, Clingendael and, of course, the Zuiderpark are among them. The Haagsche forest was once part of the dunes and had its border at Scheveningen beach. Present-day The Hague has existed since the year 1230. Count Floris built a modest castle on the site where a homestead once stood for Lady Meilindis. During the Eighty Years' War, The Hague was plundered and became almost depopulated. The Hague was the Spanish headquarters during the siege of Leiden.
